traceroute Command

The traceroute command in Linux is used to trace the route that packets take to reach a specific network host. It shows the IP addresses of the routers that packets pass through on their way to the destination host.

Here are some examples of how to use the traceroute command:

Trace the route to a specific host: traceroute example.com
Use ICMP packets instead of UDP packets: traceroute -I example.com
Set the maximum number of hops: traceroute -m 15 example.com
Show IP address and hostname of the routers: traceroute -n example.com
Use a specific source IP address: traceroute -s 192.168.1.100 example.com

traceroute command is mostly used to troubleshoot network connectivity issues, check if there are any routing problems, or to find out the geographical location of the servers.

Example:

#!/bin/bash
# This script will trace the route to google.com

traceroute google.com

Another Example:

#!/bin/bash
# This script will trace the route to a specific IP address and show the IP address and hostname of the routers

traceroute -n 8.8.8.8

You can also use traceroute command with grep command to filter the output to show only specific information.

traceroute google.com | grep -E '([0-9]{1,3}\.[0-9]{1,3}\.[0-9]{1,3}\.[0-9]{1,3}|[a-z]+)'

The above command will show the IP addresses and hostnames of the routers along the path.
