Back in 2013, Brain Dean the man behind famous SEO blog (Backlinko), invented a new Search engine optimization technique, which he named Skyscraper technique.
Brain Dean, was walking around los angeles, around Skyscraper buildings, when a question popped into his head.
He asked himself, what was the tallest building, which he knew. But when he asked himself, about the second tallest building on earth, he didn’t know the answer.
In that very moment, he realized that nobody remembered the second best.
Armed with this knowledge, he extrapolated his hypothesis, and inducted it, into Search engine optimization, and what he discovered was a dream made in heaven.
He revealed this new found knowledge, with evidence for success, and since then, many people have replicated his experiment, with varying degrees of success.
What is Skyscraper Technique?
The skyscraper technique is a search engine optimization technique invented by Brain Dean of backlinko, which involves, building a skyscraper article (as the name implies), that blows other articles online out of the competition.
As such, search engines have no choice than to rank your article on the first page, since it is the meanest skyscraper article available.
Since allegorically speaking, everybody remember the tallest building, but few remember the second tallest building.
The skyscraper Technique has become an important SEO resource for online marketers, and involves just steps:
- Find link-worthy content
- Make something even better
- Reach out to the right people
He first tested this assertion on his infamous blog post, which he named Google;s 200 ranking factors.
Skyscraper Technique Overview (Steps)
Brain Dean of backlinko has covered the skyscraper technique extensively on his blog, so in this blog post, I will only be summarizing everything he said, in an easy to digest manner.
The premise for a skyscraper content is to imagine a skyscraper, and how impressive they look.
Now despite the fact that they are impressive, doesn’t mean
1. Find Link-Worthy Content
The first step in the skyscraper technique involves doing keyword research, and then finding the right article to write.
There is no point writing about a grain of sand you found in you bag; nobody is searching for that on search engines. So you might be the only one to read it on your blog.
Instead, you need to write, link worthy content, that people search daily. That way you can get website visitors, which you can in turn monetize.
This is why keyword research is extremely important, and you need to get low hanging fruit keywords, which can be easily ranked for.
2. Make Something even Better
The next step of the skyscraper technique involves writing an even more impressive article, than the one you just saw online.
That way search engines, will nod in the right direction towards your article.
3. Reach out to the right people
Next step involves reaching out to the right people by sending out cold emails and politely ask them to link back to your article.
Reaching out to the right people is important so you can get backlinks that can boost your articles in the right direction.
Burj Khalifa SEO (Update 2022)
So after going through Brain Dean’s infamous skyscraper content, I asked myself, how can I improve the article (albeit a little).
Then I came up with the though Burj Khalifa SEO. Funny and cringe right?
I know, but here me out first.
We all know that Burj Khalifa is the tallest building on earth, and it has 163 floors. But as an observer from outside, you do not see all these things,
What you see is the mirror available. Right?
These mirrors, I say are external backlinks.
In other words, the Burj Khalifa SEO technique is the technique of using external reference urls, to force search engines to notice your article.
But note external reference url, most correlate with the length of your article. For example this article has 60 external reference urls attached to it.
The urls have no function besides, making search engines notice the articles and vetting the articles as a liable resource.
Have you ever wondered why Wikipedia articles always rank number 1 or 2?
Personally, I think is due to the humongous amount of reference links they have at the bottom of the website articles.
But note, you cannot abuse the Burj Khalifa SEO technique, if not your website can get penalized. Also, you cannot add a title to the link, instead you must put the full link as it is, under your reference section.
The Burj Khalifa SEO, if done sparingly can help you boost your website articles quickly. But to hold on to those initial test ranking, you must show google that your articles are actually answering the question queries.
If not, you will not hold on to those initial test traffic.
After your articles have ranked, you can then remove or reduce the number of reference links, at the bottom of your articles.
Below, I outline some of the most important benefits of the Burj Khalifa SEO technique.
When it Doesn’t Work
Despite reading a blog post on skyscraper content, many people cannot form an SEO optimized content. Because they lack the proper understanding of things.
Lack of Understanding
Many people don’t understand that this technique is only to make search engine discover your article. But if your article is nonsense, then in due time, it will quickly get dropped from search rankings.
Bad Chef or Artist
Many bloggers cannot combine and cook up original though in an easy to understand manner. They lack originality of thought.
As such, they can never cook up good articles. The only thing they are good at is copying.
The best way to become a better article writer, is to read more, and write more, and in due time, you would have improved your writing skills to the max.
Laziness of Original Thought
Many people online are just greedy and just want to make quick cash, without putting in the effort. As such, they just plagiarize, the content of other people, and later wonder why their website is not succeeding.
You will have to sit down, and actually grind, to see this work out for you. There is no easy way out. The only easy way is the hard way.
