What is Pem File Extension Format?

1 min

A file with the .pem file extension is a Privacy Enhanced Mail Certificate file. It’s a type of X509 certificate that is used to establish a secure connection between two systems. PEM files are usually encoded in ASCII and contain base64 encoded data. They can be used for a variety of purposes, including:

  • Authenticating SSL/TLS connections
  • Authenticating server and client connections in web applications
  • Storing X509 public keys
  • Storing and transferring certificate signing requests (CSRs)
  • Storing and transferring certificate revocation lists (CRLs)

PEM files typically begin with “—–BEGIN CERTIFICATE—–” and end with “—–END CERTIFICATE—–“. They can be opened and viewed with a text editor, but they are usually used by software programs and servers to establish secure connections.
