compress Command

The compress command in Linux is used to compress files in order to save disk space. The compressed files have a .Z extension added to their names and are typically smaller in size than the original files.

Here are some examples of how to use the compress command:

compress file.txt: This command will compress the file file.txt and create a new file named file.txt.Z. The original file will be kept, but its contents will be replaced with the compressed version.
compress -v file.txt : This command will compress the file file.txt and create a new file named file.txt.Z and also displays the percentage reduction of the file size
compress -d file.txt.Z: This command will decompress the file file.txt.Z and create a new file named file.txt. The compressed file will be kept, but its contents will be replaced with the decompressed version.
compress -r dir : This command will compress all the files in the directory ‘dir’ and it’s subdirectories

It’s also important to note that compress command is not widely used now as it’s been replaced by more efficient compression tools such as gzip and bzip2, which are more widely used today.

You can use the command ‘gzip’ or ‘bzip2’ to compress and decompress files instead of ‘compress’.

Example:

[email protected]:~$ gzip file.txt

[email protected]:~$ ls
file.txt.gz

[email protected]:~$ gunzip file.txt.gz

[email protected]:~$ ls
file.txt
