bash is a command in Linux that starts the Bash shell, which is a command-line interface (CLI) for interacting with the operating system. Bash stands for “Bourne-Again shell” and is a free and open-source version of the Bourne shell, which is a Unix shell that was first introduced in 1979. Bash is the default shell on Linux and macOS systems, and it is also available for Windows.

Here are some examples of using the bash command:

To start a Bash shell on the terminal, you would use the following command:

bash

This will start the Bash shell and you will be presented with a prompt where you can enter commands.

To run a shell script called myscript.sh, you would use the following command:

bash myscript.sh

This will run the myscript.sh shell script using the Bash shell.

To run a command with administrative privileges, you can prefix the command with “sudo” and use bash.

sudo bash -c "command"

To start a new Bash shell with a specific command, you can use the -c option.

bash -c "command1; command2"

To run a command in the background and get the prompt back, you can suffix command with &

bash -c "command &"
